EDITOR: According to the Feb. 22
article on the Tomales High School mascot, Gary Higgins
says that the mascot, a Brave, is honorable and doesn't
see how it could be racist. The mascot isn't only
dishonorable, it degrades an entire race of people. Mascots
are generally animals: pumas, dragons, sharks, etc. By making an Indian
Brave a mascot, the school is unconsciously degrading
the image of an Indian Brave to the level of a beast. The mascot
needs to change. An entire race of people shouldn't be looked upon as
animals.
